When She Was Bad by Tammy Cohen
'Amira, Sarah, Paula, Ewan and Charlie have worked together for years - they know how each one likes their coffee, whose love life is a mess, whose children keep them up at night. But their comfortable routine life is suddenly shattered when an aggressive new boss walks in ....'
This was a great trashy thriller- a quick easy read with enough twists and gossipy style to keep me entertained. 3/5
Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh
'A lonely young woman working in a boys’ prison outside Boston in the early 60s is pulled into a very strange crime, in a mordant, harrowing story of obsession and suspense, by one of the brightest new voices in fiction.'
More of a character study than a thriller as I was expecting this was a well written exploration into self loathing, obsession and loneliness. I enjoyed it but found it very slow and the crime part didn't happen until the last few chapters of the book. I will still definitely look out for future work by the author. 3.5/5
Alan Partridge: Nomad by Steve Coogan (audiobook)
'Alan dons his boots, windcheater and scarf and embarks on an odyssey through a place he once knew - it's called Britain - intent on completing a journey of immense personal significance. Diarising his ramble in the form of a 'journey journal', Alan details the people and places he encounters, ruminates on matters large and small and, on a final leg fraught with danger, becomes - not a man (because he was one to start off with) - but a better, more inspiring example of a man.'
I, Partridge- Alan's Autobiography is one of my favourite audiobooks which I have listened to countless times and still never fails to make me laugh. Nomad is no different and again narrated by Coogan in character this was a hilarious listen especially when he goes off on his angry rants. If you are a fan on Alan Partridge then this is a must. 4/5
The Hidden Girl by Louise Millar (audiobook)
'This gripping psychological thriller follows a young woman who uncovers a terrible secret in her idyllic suburban neighbourhood—but who will believe her?'
The audiobook for this was read by my favourite narrator Clare Corbett which is the reason I got it. This was brilliantly dark and creepy and very suspenseful- I got through it very quick as I was desperate to know what happened and as well as guessing nowhere close I wasn't disappointed. Corbett is just a master narrator when it comes to thrillers- and I was pleased to discover she has narrated two other Louise Millar books :) 4/5
Zodiac Starforce: By the Power of Astra by Kevin Panetta
'They're an elite group of teenage girls with magical powers who have sworn to protect our planet against dark creatures . . . as long as they can get out of class! Known as the Zodiac Starforce, these high-school girls aren't just combating math tests. They're also battling monsters--not your typical afterschool activity!'
Like a mix between Buffy and Sailor Moon this is fun, cute and I love the focus on female friendship at the heart of the story. Fingers crossed for more issues. 4/5
Paper Girls Vol.2 by Brian K. Vaughan
'The smash-hit series from BRIAN K. VAUGHAN and CLIFF CHIANG continues with a bold new direction, as intrepid young newspaper deliverers Erin, Mac, and Tiffany find themselves launched from 1988 to a distant and terrifying future...the year 2016.'
There's not much more I can say about this other than I love love love it! Everything about it is perfect- the artwork, colour palette, sassy characters, witty dialogue, intriguing story. Just brilliant. 5/5
